Fro III Schedule

These days I look into the mirror and say to myself, "Doing it for the kids."

In mid-March I am shaving my head to raise money to conquer kids cancer. To bring awareness to the cause, I grow a silly afro. Below is the campaign schedule, based entirely on the most important holidays.

January 1 (New Years Day) -- Prepare mailing lists, print campaign buttons
January 20 (Inauguration Day) -- register at St Bs

February 2 (Groundhogs Day) -- send mailing to major donors
February 12(Darwin's Birthday) -- email to Friends of Fro,
February 29 -- not this year

March 1 -- release video
March 15 (Ides of March) -- email reminders, ask directly for money, Fro on tour
March 17 (St Patricks Day) --St Baldricks Day. A desperately needed shave.
March 20 (First Day of Spring)-- First Day of Fro 4.0

April 1 (April Fools Day)--Release "Mow that Fro III"
May 25 (Memorial Day) -- Starting to look normal
June 30 (end of Fiscal Year) -- Campaign ends

It Ain't Over 'til Its Over

Apparently it ain't over yet.

In a late surge, nearly $200 was donated on my head in early May. Pushing my total over $4000. As promised, for every thousand I will add an inch of Fro. So last years paltry four inch fro will be topped by the 2009 Fro and five inches.

Stay tuned.

Here 's a photo 28 days after the last shave.

Grand Total $3868

Thank you everyone for your support. At the end of April my campaign raised $3868 for the St Baldricks Foundation. I had a few pledges that did not come in--but its not too late.

I shaved my head until April 1. Went to Boston to show off the Mr Clean look to my New England pals, and then let my hair start growing back in.

I posted the final video of the year today, Mow That Fro. You can watch it by clicking on the youtube link.

Thanks again,
The artist formerly known as Fro

PS. In Cleveland we raised $163,632, and nationally over 14 million is in the bank.

Fro surges past $3000 | Declares VICTORY

In a stunning last minute victory Fro announced today he will shave his head, in support of kids with cancer who lose their hair. By surpassing the campaign goal Fro also promised there will be a fro next year.

Thank you for your support. And if you haven't made a donation, there is still plenty of time. St Baldricks is a big organization and does not close their books March 17.

(CLEVELAND) The campaign to save Fro remains $240 short of its $3000 campaign goal. By not reaching the magic number, the Fro will not comeback next year.

The Friends of Fro committee is working furiously to promote the headshaving, asking for only $10 donations. Fro's mother has reissued her video, "Mom says Get a Haircut."

Pulling out all the stops, the appeal has reached China. Follow the link to YouTube China. Last year's headshaving, CHINESE | Mow that fro. The friends insist the fro must return .

FRO COMES UP SHORT

My fellow Americans. Let me be perfectly clear.
The FRO is in trouble.

YES! Many of my supporters have observed that the FRO has come up short. This year's fro is a calculated 1/3 less than last year's wild ambition--1/3 shorter, but make no mistake, I am sporting a fro.

YES! Many of my friends have observed that I set my goal at a $3,000--less than 1/2 of the amount last year.

OH NO! Did you know that I have FAILED to raise even 1/4 of last year’s funds! Only $1,750. If I fail to reach my modest $3,000 goal, the fro will have been voted out of office. Next year there will be NO FRO!

HOW CAN YOU HELP SAVE THE FRO?
My email list of friends includes 250 names. I need one half of my friends to contribute $10 (one haircut). Ten dollars from half of you, and I will make my goal. And the FRO grows back.

TEN DOLLARS! ONE HAIRCUT!

MONDAY, MARCH 17

· I am shaving my head to honor all the doctors, nurses, and careworkers who help the children everyday.

Yes, I did say shave my head! I have registered to go under the clippers during a St. Baldrick's Foundation event to raise funds for childhood cancer research.
Since its inception in 2000, St. Baldrick’s has raised more than $34 million and grown into the world’s largest fundraising event for childhood cancer. Worldwide 160,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year and despite tremendous progress, cancer remains the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.

St. Baldrick’s research grants help fill crucial funding gaps at medical institutions where children are treated for cancer, ensuring the finest care for every child. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation has funded 13 research fellows, launching brilliant new careers in childhood cancer research. And grant funds have been distributed to over 230 institutions for laboratory research and to help make clinical trials available to more children than ever, giving those children treatment that offers the best chance for a cure.

While battling cancer, children lose not only their hair but years of their childhood, and sometimes their lives. In comparison to their struggle, shaving my head is a small sacrifice, and the money raised will make a difference for children with cancer now and in the future.
So, I am asking you to help me raise as much money as I can for the foundation--both to justify this crazy decision, and to fund as much research as possible! No amount is too big or too small--every gift will be appreciated. Please help me reach my goal of $3,000 by March 17th.

To donate online, visit http://www.stbaldricks.org/, click on "Donate" and search for me by filling in my first and last name under "Find a Participant." Then click on my name or picture and complete the donation transaction. You can also donate over the phone by calling 888-899-BALD. I will also be collecting pledges.

I hope you will join me at A. J. Rocco's on St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) after 5:00 to watch or volunteer as I help Shave the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer!

Sincerely,
Thomas Barnard

FRO NEWS | When Big Hair Ruled the ABA

Will Ferrell's PR machine is hard at work promoting his new film, "Semi-Pro". Film is set back in the 70s in the American Basketball Association, and it seems nearly everyone sports a fro. Check out the bygone days of the ABA and BIG FROS by following the Cleveland Plain Dealer's recommended link:

Presidents Day | Videos

Postcard VOTE BALD

I am on the campaign trail again.

On March 17, St. Patrick's day, I am shaving my head to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This year I am honoring Alex and Michael. I am also honoring the parents of cancer kids and the careworkers (nurses and doctors) on the front lines.

The whole idea of kids having cancer is a tough pill to swallow. So the folks at St B's shave their heads to show support for the kids. It gets a little off track from talking specifically about cancer--but the resulting funds raised have been impressive. So I stick with the fun stuff, build awareness.

You can help me out. Share my videos with your friends, and make a campaign donation. All of your money goes direct to St. B's. All of my promotions are funded at my expense (and the many volunteers who appear in my videos).

Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow!

According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he doesn’t see his shadow, there’ll be an early spring.

Regardless, in six more weeks, I’m shaving my head bald.

Happy Groundhogs Day!

I’m going bald! Again!

On March 17th, I’m shaving my head for St. Baldrick’s. But not just any head, I’m shaving “the FRO.” Last year’s shaving of the ‘fro raised $6,500 for St. Baldrick’s. In Cleveland we raised over $220,000 and worldwide the organization surpassed $12.8 million.

You may recall the mission of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, “Shaving the way to conquer kid’s cancer”. I’m helping raise awareness and funds to cure kid’s cancer by supporting cancer research and fellowships.

I’m raising awareness and asking for donations with many of the same antics as last year: bumper stickers, buttons, colorful brochures, and zany videos.

This year’s theme is based on the 2008 presidential election. I’ll be churning out slogans, propaganda, and letters—like this one—asking for a campaign donation. Last year a lot of friends contributed $10 so that I would cut my hair for St Bs. Here is where I stand with a $10 haircut against the other hopefuls:

$400 John Edwards
$50 Mitt Romney
$20 Ron Paul
$20 John McCain
$15 Mike Huckabee

$10 FRO
$4 Dennis Kucinich

Perhaps you could help me move up the list! Can I count on your support for this year’s campaign too?

Granite State

Alright, I'm not sure collecting delegates is the way to go. Perhaps I should campaign as a write in candidate. Ya'll write in the amount of your donation on a check to St Baldricks and everything will be a success.

I only picked up three total delegates from Iowa and don't know anybody from New Hampshire.

No official shavee assignment yet. But I will send out an email message to my list as soon as its official. All details will be posted here too.

Cheers,
Fro
